Typical hazards

Early childhood centres care for very young children, so falls, choking, allergic reactions and sudden illness are the day-to-day concerns, alongside a high duty of care. Staff manual handling and slips also feature.

Trained First Aiders

First aiders need current paediatric first aid skills, and cover must span your full operating hours. Early childhood services also have their own first aid and staffing requirements to meet.

First aid kits

Kits should include supplies suited to infants and young children, be kept out of children's reach, and be easy for staff to grab quickly — including for outings.

AEDs

If you provide an AED, make sure it supports paediatric use (paediatric pads or a child mode) given the age of the children in your care.
